Symptoms
The Avamar Client cannot browse or back up SQL Server 2016 databases on a cluster.
When running a browse command from the command line, the following error appears:
avsql Error <15125>: Specified path '<<SQL Listener\AlwaysOn Group name>>' does not exist or is not accessible
The failure occurs consistently for SQL Server 2016 clustered configurations that use AlwaysOn availability groups.
Cause
The Avamar
avsql Plug‑in cannot query the AlwaysOn group name by using PowerShell or internal .NET commands. This limitation prevents the plug‑in from resolving SQL Server listener paths during browse and backup operations.
Resolution
Upgrade the Avamar Server to a supported version that includes the fix.
- Verify the existing Avamar Server version.
- Upgrade the Avamar Server to version 19.4.100‑124 or later.
- Retry the SQL Server browse and backup operation.
After the upgrade, the avsql Plug‑in correctly resolves the AlwaysOn group name and completes browse and backup operations successfully.
Additional Information
- This issue affects SQL Server 2016 clustered environments that use AlwaysOn availability groups.
- Earlier Avamar versions do not fully support querying SQL Server AlwaysOn group names through PowerShell or .NET.
- Dell supports SQL Server cluster backups only on Avamar versions that include the updated avsql Plug‑in behavior.
