Avamar: How to Verify Permissions for Accounts in SQL Server Management Studio

Instructions
Avamar requires permissions within SQL Server in order to perform a backup or restore.
Procedure
- Connect to the SQL Server host by using Remote Desktop.
- Open SQL Server Management Studio.
- Connect to the appropriate SQL Server instance.
- In the Object Explorer pane, expand Security.
- Expand Logins.
- Identify the account used by the Avamar Backup Agent.
- By default, Avamar uses the NT
AUTHORITY\SYSTEMaccount. - If the Backup Agent uses a different account, select that account instead.
- By default, Avamar uses the NT
- Right‑click the selected account and select Properties.
- In the Select a page pane, select Server Roles.
- Verify that the sysadmin role is enabled.

- Insufficient SQL Server permissions can cause Avamar SQL backup and restore failures.
- Permission changes may require restarting the Avamar Backup Agent service.
