Symptoms

Add Resource > Add Node/Node Scale Up operation results in error:

Add node is not allowed because the MTU is not set to 9216 on these switch interfaces connected to nodes in the service

Cause

The MTU on the server facing data interface on the "Top of Rack" switch for the node that has been recently scaled down or removed is reset to 1500 from 9216 during the tear down process. 

Details of when this issue is seen:
  • "Add Node"/Node Scale Up operation is performed shortly after a "Remove Resource"/Node Tear Down.
  • "Add Node"/Node Scale Up operation expects all server facing data interfaces for the nodes in the service to be 9216.
  • The MTU on the server facing data interface on the "Top of Rack" switch for the node that has been recently scaled down or removed is reset to 1500 from 9216 during the tear down process.
  • The node that has been torn down from the service has MTU considered and checked during Node Scale Up operation, but this node does not get filtered for this operation until a manual inventory of the top of rack switches is run after waiting for sometime after node scale down operation (approximately around 30 minutes)

Resolution

Wait for 30 minutes after a scale down operation, run manual inventory of all the Top of Rack switches and then perform Node Scale Up operation.
