Symptoms

Level full backups of a NetWorker client succeed; however, incremental backups fail, reporting the following error in the backup log:

175297:save: Unable to set up the direct save with server '<backup_server_name>': Could not get session key from <client_server_name> for GSS authentication with <storage_node_name>: Authentication error; why = Server rejected credential.

The backup logs can be viewed in the NetWorker Management Console (NMC) by opening the Action Details from the Monitoring window.
Expand the Policy, expand the Workflow, right-click the Action, then click Show Details. Click the failed backups under Failed Sessions, then click Show Messages.

The backup logs are also available on the NetWorker server:

  • Linux: /nsr/logs/policy/POLICY_NAME/WORKFLOW_NAME/ACTION_NAME_JOBID_logs/jobid.log
  • Windows (Default): C:\Program Files\EMC NetWorker\nsr\logs\policy\POLICY_NAME\WORKFLOW_NAME\ACTION_NAME_JOBID_logs\jobid.log

Similar errors may be observed in the Server, Client, and Storage Node daemon.raw:

Cause

NetWorker peer information is out of sync between Storage node and networker client post NetWorker client upgrade.

Resolution

NetWorker peer certificates must be deleted from the NetWorker client; also the peer certificate for the NetWorker client must be deleted from the NetWorker server, see:

NOTE: If a remote NetWorker Storage Node is used during this backup, peer information must be cleared from the Storage node as well.
