Symptoms

The following are observed when back-up fails:
  • Avamar backup jobs fail during execution.
  • Backup logs report errors related to directory creation on Data Domain.
  • The Avamar system cannot create the required staging area on the Data Domain system.
  • The following messages appear in the Avamar logs:

2022-09-10 02:03:14 avtar Error <40064>: Failed to create DDR staging area

Cause

Avamar requires a disk staging area on the Data Domain system. Disk staging is disabled by default, or the user may have disabled it. Data Domain cannot create new directories when the staging reserve is not configured or the available disk space is exhausted.

To confirm the issue on the Data Domain system, run the following command:

grep "space left on device" ddfs.info | less

These messages confirm that the Data Domain file system has run out of available space for staging operations.

Resolution

Configure Disk Staging on Data Domain.

Enable disk staging and define an appropriate staging reserve to ensure sufficient space for Avamar operations:

Steps
  1. Log in to the PowerProtect DD System Manager.
  2. Select Data Management > File System > Summary > Settings > General.
  3. In the Staging Reserve section, switch the setting to Enabled.
  4. Enter a value in the % of Total Space field.
    1. Dell Technologies recommends 20% to 30% of total disk space.
  5. Click Save to apply the changes.
  6. Run a test backup to confirm successful operation.

Additional Information

  • Disk staging does not require a license.
  • Disk staging is compatible with backup applications that reclaim space when files are deleted.
  • Proper staging reserve sizing prevents backup failures before scheduled cleanup tasks run.
