Dell Unity: Moving NAS server from pool with no data reduction to pool with data reduction

Summary: This article explains one method to move a NAS server from a storage pool without data reduction to a storage pool with data reduction in a Dell Unity array, ensuring the migration can be done successfully while enabling data reduction benefits. ...

Symptoms

To move a NAS server from a storage pool without data reduction to a storage pool with data reduction enabled, local replication can be used for the pool change. The steps for this process are similar to normal local replication, with the key difference being that no new interfaces must be created for the replication.

Cause

Data reduction and Deduplication can be enabled from the UI (Edit the file system and check the feature and apply)

If the data reduction feature is disabled or unavailable, it may be due to one of the following reasons:

  1. Model Incompatibility:
The specific model of the Dell Unity array may not support data reduction. Certain Dell Unity models cannot enable this feature.

  2. Non-Flash Pool:
Data reduction can only be enabled on All-Flash Pools. If the storage pool in question is a Hybrid or Disk Pool, the data reduction feature is disabled out.

  3. Unity OE Version:
Data reduction functionality requires Dell Unity OE version 4.2 or later. Also, Thin File storage resources must be created within an All-Flash Pool to use data reduction

Resolution

  1. Configure Local Replication:
Set up local replication and select Storage Pool2 as the destination pool. Ensure that Pool2 has enough available space to accommodate the data being migrated from Pool1.

  2. Verify Space Availability:
Before initiating the migration, check that there is sufficient space in Storage Pool2 to store the data. This is important since Pool2 enables data reduction, which could affect the space requirements.

  3. Replication Process:
Once local replication is configured, proceed with the replication as you would for a regular operation. The migration moves the NAS server's data from Pool1 to Pool2 while taking advantage of data reduction in the target pool.
