Symptoms

Below error message displays when running disaster recovery to an alternative host:

RMAN-03009: failure of sql command on default channel at xx/xx/2026 11:16:59
RMAN-11003: failure during parse/execution of SQL statement: ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE TO
ORA-02236: invalid file name

Cause

The expected SQL command output should be:

ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE <old_file_pathname> TO <new_file_pathname>

The above error is because the new defined folder path is the same as the original source folder when choosing "Restore to alternate folder".

Resolution

  1. If the restored file path is the same as original file path, then choose "Restore to original folder".
  2. If choosing "Restore to alternate folder", the new folder's pathname is required to be different from the original source file path.
