NetWorker: Backup fails with the error "Group contains no enabled clients"

Summary: A NetWorker backup job fails because the selected protection group in the workflow does not have any enabled clients associated with it.

Symptoms

The backup operation fails with error messages similar to the following:

The group or policy information has been successfully returned.
Group 'xxxxxxx' contains no enabled clients. Enable one or more clients, then restart the backup operation.
Action backup traditional 'backup' with job id 1234567 is exiting with status 'failed', exit code 2

Cause

The backup job fails because the protection group contains no enabled clients.
When there are no active clients (or scheduled backups are disabled), NetWorker has no workloads to process, resulting in a failed backup.

Resolution

This issue typically occurs due to one of the following reasons:

  • No clients are selected in the protection group, or
  • The selected client has Scheduled backup disabled

Follow the steps below to resolve the issue:

  1. Go to the Protection tab.
  2. Navigate to Groups, and select the affected protection group.
  3. Verify that the required clients are selected for backup.
  • If no clients are selected, add the appropriate clients and save the group.

If clients are already selected, continue with the steps below:

  1. In the Protection tab, select the affected client.
  2. Right‑click the client and choose Modify Client Properties.
  3. In the General tab, under Backup options, ensure that Scheduled backup is enabled.
  4. Save the changes.
  5. Trigger the backup and verify that it completes successfully.
