IDPA: Workaround for CVE-2026-31431 Copy Fail Vulnerability

Symptoms

Security scan shows the following vulnerability on the ACM, Avamar, DPA, and DPC servers.

Cause

Vulnerability Origin
CVE-2026-31431 tracked as "Copy Fail," is a critical vulnerability in the Linux kernel. It permits a local non‑root user to obtain full root privileges.

Affected Products

  • IDPA version 2.7.9 and earlier
  • Components: Avamar, Avamar Proxy, DPA, ACM, DPC

The flaw resides in the handling of the algif_aead kernel module, which can be exploited to bypass normal privilege checks.

Resolution

This vulnerability effects Avamar, Avamar Proxy, DPA, ACM, and DPC components of IDPA

  • DPC is providing an OS update with a fix for this issue. Once that is available, apply the OS update to fix this issue. 
  • Avamar, Avamar Proxy, DPA, and ACM are expected to be addressed in the next version of the IDA code. 

To work around this issue in Avamar, Avamar Proxy, DPA, and ACM, do the following on each system as the root user.

  1. Create the following file, /etc/modprobe.d/10-cvs-fix.conf, with the following content:
blacklist algif_aead
install algif_aead /bin/false
  1. Run the following command as root user:
modprobe -r algif_aead || echo "algif_aead module could not be removed, reboot the server to clear this module."

 

NOTE: If the command returns the message algif_aead module could not be removed, then reboot the system to ensure that the module is not loaded.
