Data Domain: Required hardware configurations for upgrading a Data Domain appliance to Cloud Tier or Cache Tier
Summary: To upgrade Data Domain appliances with additional storage tiers, such as Cloud Tier (LTR), Extended Retention, or Cache Tier, minimum platform hardware requirements must be met, prior to installing licenses or allocating capacity to a new tier. Instructions
There are some requirements that are often overlooked, and could cause some confusion when expanding a Data Domain with an additional tier:
- Some models have a Minimum SAS card count required to enable a feature.
- Extended Retention and Cloud tier cannot co-exist on the same Data Domain system.
- Maximum metadata storage is required regardless of licensed Cloud capacity.
- Cloud MetaData disk units are groups of 15 disks in an ES30 or a DS60 enclosure.
- Improper total memory size blocks creation of an expanded tier when you run the command #filesys expand.
Missing or improperly sized licenses can block creation or expansion of a tier such as Extended Retention Tier (E.R.), Cloud Tier (L.T.R), or Cache tier.
Run the following commands to view installed feature licenses, and tier-specific capacity licenses, which are applied to the Data Domain.
