Symptoms

Unable to add a Data Domain to the Avamar grid.

Adding a Data Domain to an Avamar grid fails with the error message:  'Error initializing lsu' on the Avamar Administrator UI

Cause

Data Domain has DD Boost access list enabled, and the Avamar Hostname is not added to the access list.

If the NFS System is not active , see step 1-B in resolution.

If DD boost service is not enabled, see step 1-C in resolution.

Resolution

  1. Check if the DD Boost access list enabled on the Data Domain.
    	ddboost clients show config

    	Sample output:

    	# ddboost clients show config
    	Client Encryption Strength Authentication Mode
    	-------- ------------------- -------------------
    	*        none                none
    	bu_srv_1 high one-way
    	bu_srv_2 high two-way
    	bu_srv_3 high anonymous
    	-------- ------------------- -------------------

The above output shows that the Data Domain has a ddboost access list and only the clients listed above can connect to the Data Domain using the ddboost protocol.

Note: If the Data Domain does not have a ddboost access list, stop following this KB.

    1. Check if the DD Boost access list enabled on the Data Domain.
      1. Check the Data Domain's nfs status.
        		ddboost@DD01# nfs status

The NFS system is currently not active.

Total number of NFS requests handled = 0.

If NFS is not active, it must be enabled to run the command.
        		nfs enable

        Go to step 4.

      2. Check the Data Domain's ddboost status.
        		sysadmin@DD01# ddboost status
        		DD Boost status: disabled

        If disabled enable it.
        		sysadmin@DD01 # ddboost enable
        		DD Boost enabled.
        		Enable DDBoost over FC service...
        		Please wait...

DDBoost over FC service is enabled.
        		sysadmin@DDO1# ddboost status
        		DD Boost status: enabled

        Go to step 4.

    2. If the Avamar server name is not present in the ddboost access list, add the FQDN of the Avamar Utility Node to the ddboost access list using the following command:

      	ddboost access add clients <avamar_utlity_node_fqdn>

      	Sample output:

      	ddboost access add clients avamar01.emc.com
** This command is deprecated and will be unavailable in future releases.
      	Use 'ddboost clients add' instead.
      	avamar01.emc.com : Added

    3. Verify that the Avamar server is added to the ddboost access list.

      	ddboost access show

      	Sample output:

      	sysadmin@testdd# ddboost access show
** This command is deprecated and will be unavailable in future releases.
      	Use 'ddboost clients show' instead.
DD Boost access allowed from the following clients:
      	avamar01.emc.com
      	coolgridvm1
      	coolgridmproxy04
      	winbackup4

    4. Attempt to add the Data Domain again.
