Data Domain: Slow cleaning caused by replication lag

Summary: This article is provided to diagnose and resolve slow cleaning issues caused by a replication context with lag.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

  • Cleaning takes longer than expected.
  • Cleaning does not progress or completes only partially.
  • Replication contexts show outstanding lag or backlog.

Applies To:

  • All Data Domain Models
  • All Software Releases

Cause

Cleaning may run slowly or fail to complete when replication is behind. Insufficient network bandwidth or other issues between replication partners can cause replication backlogs. When the lag is high, cleaning cannot fully run until replication either catches up or is temporarily interrupted.

To resolve this condition, replication must either:

  • Catch up naturally (for example, improved bandwidth, reduced ingest), or
  • Be manually broken and resynchronized after cleaning completes.

Resolution

  1. Confirm that there is a replication context with lag causing slow cleaning: Data Domain - Measuring Replication Throughput
  2. If replication lag is confirmed, break the affected replication context to allow cleaning to proceed.
