Symptome

Backups fail for VM hosts with error in the summary. 

VMware admin sees the below symptoms:
  • Admin cannot create a VM snapshot, 
  • Sees the error in tasks and events: A general system error occurred: Exceeded the maximum number of permitted snapshots.

Ursache

The issue occurs when the number of snapshots are restricted for a VM by setting the value on snapshot.maxSnapshots parameter.

Lösung

The VMware administrator has to:
  1. Power down the virtual machine.
  2. Right-click the virtual machine in the Web Client and click Edit Settings.
  3. Click the VM Options tab, under Advanced, select the Edit Configuration option.
  4. Search for a string name called snapshot.maxSnapshots and increase its value.
  5. Click OK to save the changes.
  6. Power on the virtual machine and create the required snapshot.
