Symptome

Observed Issues After Motherboard Replacement.

  • System fails to boot into the operating system.
  • BOSS card is missing from the UEFI boot sequence.
  • BOSS and both M.2 drives are detected in BIOS and iDRAC, yet the system does not boot.
  • Virtual Disk (VD0) reports a Healthy status.

Ursache

Loss of BOSS UEFI Boot Entry After Motherboard and TPM Replacement.

The replacement of the mainboard and TPM on a PowerFlex R650 system resets the UEFI firmware configuration. This reset removes previously stored boot options, including the BOSS (Dell BOSS) entry, even though the BOSS hardware and its virtual disk remain functional.

Lösung

  • Restore BOSS UEFI Boot Option after Motherboard Replacement

Caution: Ensure the Boot Mode (UEFI vs. Legacy) matches the configuration captured in the pre‑replacement TSR. Mismatched boot mode can prevent the system from locating the boot loader.

Note: Verify that both M.2 drives and the virtual disk (VD0) remain healthy in iDRAC → Storage → Physical Disks and in BIOS → Device Settings → BOSS Configuration Utility before making changes.

  • Add One‑shot UEFI Boot Option
    • During POST, press F11 to open the Boot Manager.
    • Select One‑shot UEFI Boot Menu → Add Boot Option.
    • In the File Explorer that appears, go to the BOSS virtual disk boot loader:
[NO VOLUME LABEL] AHCI Controller in SL6: DELLBOSS VD → EFI → sles → grubx64.efi
    • Enter a descriptive name for the new boot entry.
    • Confirm and save the new boot option.
    • Exit the Boot Manager; the system should now boot successfully.

  • Update UEFI Boot Sequence
    • Reboot the server and press F2 to enter BIOS Setup.
    • Navigate to System Setup → Boot Settings → UEFI Boot Settings → UEFI Boot Sequence.
    • Locate the newly created BOSS boot entry and move it to the top of the list.
    • Save the changes and exit BIOS.

  • Verification
    • After the server restarts, confirm that the operating system loads without manual intervention.
    • In iDRAC, check that the BOSS virtual disk status remains Healthy.
    • In BIOS, verify that the BOSS entry stays at the top of the UEFI Boot Sequence after a power cycle.
