On the vCenter Web Client, the ESX host is in a disconnected state and the following alarms / alerts may be seen:
Cannot synchronize host xxxxxxxxxxx.local.
Disconnected from host. Reason: Cannot verify the SSL thumbprint.
Authenticity of the host's SSL certificate is not verified.
If we right click on the ESX host --> Connection --> Connect, and walk through the connection wizard, the connection to the ESX host fails and produces the following error:
Cannot contact the specified host (xxxxxxxxxxx.local). The host may not be available on the network, a network configuration problem may exist, or the management services on this host may not be responding.
The DNS record for the ESX host is incorrect. vCenter is unable to communicate to the ESX host using the hostname, as a result it cannot verify the SSL thumbprint.
To resolve this issue:
- Open a putty session to the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) server.
- Go to bash mode:
shell.set --enabled True
shell
- Verify that you can lookup and communicate with the ESX host.
nslookup <ESX Host FQDN>
ping <ESX Host FQDN>
- If the DNS record is incorrect or if the VCSA cannot resolve the ESX hostname, fix the issue by correcting the DNS record.
- Add the local entry in the vCenter hosts file:
vi /etc/hosts
Append: <ESX Host IP> <ESX Host FQDN>
- Save the file.
