PowerEdge: Emulex 8 Gb Fibre Channel Adapters Unable To Update Firmware From iDRAC or LifeCycle Controller

Symptoms

Firmware not updating

Cause

  • Emulex cards such as LPe1205M or LPe1200x do not have UEFI drivers which are required to perform updates using iDRAC/LC.
  • Emulex 8 Gb Fibre Channel adapters such as LPe1205M or LPe1200x do not support firmware updates from iDRAC or LifeCycle Controller.

Resolution

Do not replace hardware as this is working as designed.
To update firmware, do one of the following:

  • Run the DUP from within a supported operating system such as Windows or Linux.
  • Alternatively, firmware can be updated using vendor utilities such as OneCommand Manager(OCM) or elxflash.

 

Additional Information

Note:

  • Full support for iDRAC/LC firmware updates did not become available until 16 Gb fibre Channel.
  • Older adapters should not be expected to be supported in iDRAC/LC.
