PowerEdge: Seagate Lange SSDs May Experience Timeouts Under Certain Conditions
Summary: Under certain use-case conditions Seagate (STX) Lange SSDs may begin to timeout on operations. This article explains the root cause and provides steps to resolve this issue.
Symptoms
Cause
The SSD Garbage Collection activity is handling empty cells in addition to cells with data.
An investigation found that Garbage Collection was queuing unused, empty flash areas for maintenance activities. The cumulative effect of this significantly increased garbage collection activities over time, eventually leading to timeouts.
Resolution
Upgrade firmware to correct garbage collection functionality.
Dell identified and implemented a firmware change which prevents the inclusion of empty areas of the SSD in garbage collection. This change was implemented beginning with firmware version EC16 for Lange SSDs. Upgrade to firmware version EC16 or later to correct this issue.
Once flashed the drive will complete an initial cycle of data refresh followed by the completion of garbage collection and no longer encounter the issue.
