Symptoms
Customers may report reduced SSD performance on systems using Micron 5x00 Series drives that have accumulated ~65,535 POH which equates to roughly 7.5 years of operation
- The drive remains functional and accessible.
- No data integrity or reliability risks have been identified.
Cause
The issue is caused by an internal firmware limitation:
- The SSD uses a 16-bit counter to track workload log entries.
- This counter reaches its maximum value at 65,535 hours.

Once this threshold is reached, the firmware begins generating continuous debug log messages.
- This excessive logging consumes controller CPU resources, reducing the drive’s ability to process I/O requests efficiently.
As a result, read and write performance may degrade noticeably.
Resolution
Micron has released updated firmware that mitigates this issue.
- The minimum firmware version containing the fix for Micron 5100 M.2 drives is L013.
- The minimum firmware version containing the fix for Micron 5100 U.2 drives is L013.
- The minimum firmware version containing the fix for Micron 5200 U.2 drives is F006.
