Symptoms
Dell active stylus causes the Dell laptop screen to shut off
Dell laptop owners may experience an LCD issue. The screen turns off when the active stylus is too close to specific locations on the keyboard and palm-rest.
The LCD panel goes into modern standby when the Dell Pro Premium Active Pen PN7522W is left to rest on the open laptop.
Cause
Laptops use Hall sensors under the keyboard and palm-rest and in the LCD bezel to sense when the laptop lid is closed. Closing the laptop lid causes the LCD screen to switch off.
The Dell Pro Premium Active Pen PN7522W contains two N54 magnets. The residual induction of those magnets is around 14.5 to 14.9. This matches the magnetic induction that the Hall sensor uses to sense when the lid is closed.
The Hall sensor is triggered when the stylus is placed close to certain parts of the keyboard and touchpad. The LCD panel turns off and enters modern standby mode.
Resolution
The laptop is behaving as it was designed to in these conditions.
Do not leave the stylus on the keyboard or palm-rest area of any Dell laptop.
If the stylus is not placed to rest on the open part of the laptop, then it does not turn the LCD off.
