SSD Disk Capacity Listed As Unknown in Ubuntu

Ubuntu 24.04 OS shows disk capacity as Unknown.
Disk Capacity Unknown

Steps to recreate issue:

  1. Boot to Ubuntu
  2. Put computer into suspend
  3. Resume from suspend
  4. Check the About page
  5. Disk Capacity shows as Unknown

Cause

When the computer resumes from suspend, reopen the setting page refreshes the capacity, because not all block objects are present at the time the drive size calculation is done.

Resolution

Workaround:

Use one of the below commands to get disk information:

  • Open Terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T)
    • Run one of the following commands:
      • sudo lshw -C disk
        Or,
      • sudo df -h
        Display Disk Capacity

Long-term fix:

Ubuntu plans to include the fix in the next Ubuntu release 26.04.
