Laptops Running Ubuntu 24.04 Have No Video on External Monitor Connected Through Thunderbolt Dock

Symptoms

The external monitor connected to a laptop through a Thunderbolt dock may have no video. The issue occurs when the LCD lid is in a closed state and the laptop turns on by pressing the power button on the Thunderbolt dock.

The issue occurs only when "Use LVM and encryption" is selected and Thunderbolt technology is enabled. In this scenario, even if entering the Full Disk Encryption (LUKS) password blindly, the external monitor continues to show no video.

Affected Operating System:

  • Ubuntu 24.04 with kernel version lower than 6.17.0-1026

Cause

The required GPU driver resides on the encrypted root file system and cannot load until the passphrase is entered. This delay causes a timeout and triggers the tb_dp_resource_unavailable error.

Resolution

Note: Before starting the update, perform the following:
  • Back up all personal data. For more information, refer to Back Up and Recovery.
  • Connect the AC adapter.

Updating the Ubuntu Kernel to version 6.17.0-1026 or later on the computer resolves the issue. To update, refer to How to Upgrade your Ubuntu Operating System to the Latest Version.

Note: After updating the Kernel to 6.17.0-1026, the external monitor connected through Thunderbolt may still not display the Full Disk Encryption (LUKS) password input screen. You must enter the password blindly. After the GPU driver loads, the display on the external monitor returns. This is a limitation of the current design of the Ubuntu OS.
