Instructions

Before You Begin

This article provides advanced resolution steps for Dell laptop users who have already completed the basic AC adapter and battery charging troubleshooting steps on the Laptop Battery Not Charging: Resolve AC Adapter Issues guide.

Prerequisite: Complete the basic troubleshooting steps in the Support Library page before proceeding.

Symptoms Addressed by This Article

  • The battery is not charging despite a connected AC adapter.
  • System randomly shuts down while plugged in.
  • AC Adapter LED is off or flickering.

Section 1: Verify AC Adapter Status in BIOS

  1. Turn off your PC.
  2. Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged into a wall socket and the computer.
  3. Turn the system back on and repeatedly tap the F2 key to access the BIOS.
  • Systems manufactured after 2021: Click Overview. In the battery section, make note of the battery health and AC adapter status.
  • Systems manufactured before 2021: Expand the General tab and click Battery Information, make note of the battery health and AC adapter status.

What "Unknown" Adapter Status Means

This error occurs when the system cannot correctly identify the connected AC power adapter. It may lead to:

  • Reduced performance (CPU throttling)
  • Battery charging failure

The root cause is usually related to the adapter, DC-in port, or motherboard charging circuit.

Symptoms of an Unidentified Adapter

  • A message during POST or in the BIOS reads: "The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined."
  • BIOS shows AC Adapter = Unknown.
  • The battery may not charge.
  • Reduced performance (CPU throttling) may be observed.
NOTE: If the health is Poor or the adapter status says Unknown, contact Dell Technical Support.

Section 2: Advanced Charging and BIOS Battery Settings

Your BIOS controls how your laptop manages battery charging. Incorrect settings can prevent proper charging or limit battery capacity.

Advanced Battery Charge Configuration

Some Dell laptops offer Advanced Battery Charge Configuration.

NOTE: BIOS menu options vary by Dell laptop model; if you do not see these options, your system might not support them.
  1. Turn off your PC.
  2. Turn the system back on and repeatedly tap the F2 key to access the BIOS.
  3. Click Power tab.
  4. Review the options listed, and make the wanted changes.
  5. Click APPLY CHANGES, and then Exit.

Reading the Battery Charging LED

With your laptop turned off, plug in the AC adapter and look at the battery charging LED (usually near the power port):

LED Color
Status
Solid white or green
The battery is charging normally.
Amber or orange
The battery is charging, but health may be degraded.

Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver

The Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) helps manage power delivery on Intel-based Dell laptops. An outdated MEI driver can cause charging problems.

To update:

  1. Type SupportAssist in the Search box, and open the app.
  2. On the Home tab, select Update software
  3. Click Start.
  4. Click View updates.
  5. Select which updates you want, and click Install, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation and restart your computer if prompted.

Section 3: Reset Windows Power Management

Corrupted Windows power settings can interfere with charging. Resetting them often resolves charging behavior issues.

  1. Select Start, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. In the Command Prompt, type powercfg -restoredefaultschemes and press Enter (resets all power plans to defaults).
  3. In the Command Prompt, type powercfg -h off and press Enter (turns off hibernation).
  4. In the Command Prompt, type powercfg -h on and press Enter (re-enables hibernation).
  5. Restart the laptop. Windows recreates power management files with default settings.

Section 4: Update the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver

The Intel MEI helps manage power delivery on Intel-based Dell laptops, and an outdated MEI driver can cause charging problems.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand System devices and locate Intel Management Engine Interface or Intel ME Interface.
  3. Right-click the device and select Update driver.
  4. Choose Search automatically for drivers and follow the on-screen prompts.
  5. Restart the laptop.

Section 5: Run SupportAssist Diagnostics

Dell laptops include SupportAssist to scan for hardware-related problems, including battery issues.

  1. Open the SupportAssist battery test (if SupportAssist is not installed, follow the prompts to install it).
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions and respond to the prompts.
  3. Review the results when the diagnostic test completes. If a hardware issue is detected, you may be guided to update drivers or contact Dell Technical Support for repair options.

Section 6: USB-C Power Delivery Considerations

Not all USB-C ports support power delivery. USB-C (including Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4) devices can act as both a power supply and a power consumer.

  • Dell laptops accept various power delivery voltages and currents from AC adapters, docking stations, and monitors with Power Delivery capabilities.
  • USB-C devices requiring higher voltages or currents may not work properly without an additional power source.
  • If using a docking station: Connect the dock's cable to a USB-C port that supports power delivery, as not all ports do.

For port-specific capabilities, refer to Power Delivery Capabilities of USB-C Ports on Dell Laptops (KB000224141).

Section 7: Auto/Air Adapter (Mobile/Travel Charging)

An Auto/Air adapter allows charging from a car's cigarette lighter socket or an airplane's power outlet. Dell auto/air adapters are compatible with select Dell Latitude, Vostro, or Precision laptops. They can be purchased from the Dell website in select locations. If unavailable in your region, contact a local Dell authorized partner or reseller.

Section 8: Genuine Dell Adapter Guidance

Genuine Dell-branded parts undergo rigorous testing by qualified engineers to ensure compatibility and reliability, with a sustaining qualification process that certifies the newest technology.

  • Genuine Dell-branded parts do not void your system's hardware warranty.
  • Non-Dell parts are not covered and may void your system warranty.

Dell strongly recommends using genuine Dell batteries and AC adapters designed for your specific laptop model.
