External Devices Not Working with Dell Encryption Pre-Boot Authentication

Affected Platforms:

  • Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10

Resolution

Workaround:

Update specific settings of the BIOS. If the PBA is enabled, Dell Technologies recommends where possible to disable it before changing the BIOS settings.

To enter the BIOS, during a reboot of the machine, press F2.

Under System Configuration, select Thunderbolt Adapter Configuration, and set the security level to Security Level - No Security.

This setting automatically grants full access to any new connected thunderbolt device on the computer without pre-approval. Re-enable the PBA.
