Symptoms

Dell Technologies is committed to protecting customer data. For this purpose, we are notifying you on an issue regarding potential drive warnings that are associated with replacement drives.

Over the last several years, the enterprise hard drive industry has shifted to a more advanced format of hard drive. This format allows for higher performance and lower latency on larger capacity drives.  For PS Series arrays, firmware 9.1.x or higher is required to support a mix of current and prior drive formats. PS Series firmware below v9.1 will not allow replacement drives in a mixed format.

Dell’s recommendation is to update the PS Series array firmware to avoid any replacement drive rejection. The recommended firmware release is the latest v9.1.x or v10.0.x firmware (PS Series firmware v10.0.2 or v9.1.8 as of January 2019).
