Symptoms

Phones and tablets that are connected to a Dell Latitude Chromebook laptop cannot charge when the laptop is turned off and the AC adapter removed. Plug in a tablet or smartphone uses a Type-C cable and press the power button to turn the laptop on. The mobile device does not charge while the laptop is turned off and does not start to charge once the laptop turns on.

Note: This issue is only seen to happen on type-c devices with Dual Role Power (DRP). Dell Tablets and Huawei, LG, and Samsung phones show the issue. Whereas Sony and Nokia phones do not show the issue.

Affected Platforms:

  • Latitude 5300 2-in-1 Chromebook
  • Latitude 5400 Chromebook

Cause

This is an example of the laptop working as designed. It does not charge on Battery only, or while the laptop is powered off.

Resolution

Resolve the issue by plugging the AC adapter to the laptop. Disconnect and reconnect the mobile devices Type-C connector while the laptop is awake, to see charging begin on the device.
