Note: In a redundant PSU system, the firmware will update both PSUs while the system is off.

Caution: Performing an AC power cycle or cold boot during power supply firmware update, forces the power supply unit to enter an irrecoverable state and will cause managed system not to boot.

Caution: After a successful power supply firmware download, the managed system will turn off for a duration ranging from three to fifteen minutes to continue updating the firmware. It is imperative not to disturb/restart manually the system, wait until the PSU FW update finishes. Once the firmware update is complete, the managed system will reboot automatically.

On a PSU, only the firmware can be updated.

The main steps are:
  1. Download the firmware update file from Dell Support site.

Note: Select a supported OS file or the BIN file for an installation using the Support Live Image.

  2. Install the file from directly from the OS
  3. Follow the remaining prompts to perform the update.
  4. Upon successful completion, the DUP will prompt to reboot the system.
  5. Restart your system.
  6. After the system restarts, DUP will enter USC to complete the flashing of the PSU firmware.
  7. The actual flash begins after DUP exits USC. Please do not power off or power cycle the system as this can result in a non-functional power supply.
  8. Once the flashing process is complete the system should power back up and boot to OS.

Also, the Dell LifeCycle Controller can be used to update components of the server.
The below video demonstrates the process to update a power supply unit by using the Dell LifeCycle Controller
