The following PowerEdge Servers and Dell Scalable Solutions (DSS) products may report a high frequency of Watchdog Timer Reset occurring on iDRAC9.

  • Dell Scalable Solutions (DSS)
    • DSS9600
    • DSS9620
    • DSS9630
    • DCS9650
    • DCS9750
  • PowerEdge-C
    • C6420
  • PowerEdge Modular
    • FC640 for FX2
    • M640 for M1000e
    • M640 for VRTX

The iDRAC9 will reboot and will be temporarily unavailable after this condition. End-user environments that are utilizing remote monitoring software may receive alerts regarding iDRAC after the condition has occurred. The iDRAC Lifecycle Controller Log will record event RAC0182. During iDRAC reboot due to this condition, there is a possibility that the iDRAC may hang while re-initializing. This leads to iDRAC and HOST becoming unresponsive and may require removing AC power to recover.

Resolution

Solution

Dell EMC Engineering is aware of this issue and has released the iDRAC firmware 3.21.21.21.22 to solve this issue.
Download link of the latest iDRAC firmware version is available on this page.

Systems require a reboot of the server after the update to apply the firmware and resolve this condition.
M640 & FC640 require a physical or virtual reseat after applying the update.

Performing the reboot or reseat allows the iDRAC memory to retrain and apply the fix during the next iDRAC cold boot.

Note: The fix for DSS and modular platforms was originally in iDRAC 3.15.17.15. There is a condition that prevents the fix from correctly installing when updating from iDRAC9 3.15.15.15 directly to 3.18.18.18 or 3.21.21.21. iDRAC9 may continue to generate Watchdog Timer Resets after updating to 3.15.17.15. Update to 3.21.21.22 to fix the issue.
