Symptoms

Affected products:

  • Dell EMC OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) 9.4.0 earlier versions
  • VMware ESXi 7.0 or newer

Issue:

  • OMSA 9.4.0 and earlier versions dose not install on VMware ESXi 7.0 or newer because it is unsupported.
  • OMSA version 9.4.0 is only supported on VMware ESXi 6.5 and 6.7.
  • Prior versions of OMSA up to 9.3.1 do not prevent installation on VMware ESXi 7.0, but are also not supported.
  • Upgrading VMware ESXi 6.x to 7.0 with an unsupported version of OMSA results in the OMSA service being non-functional and an ESXi upgrade error may be reported.

Cause

VMware ESXi 7.0 CIM Server (SFCB) service requires 64-bit providers. OMSA 9.4.0 and earlier versions are 32-bit providers as required for VMware ESXi 6.7 and earlier.

Resolution

  1. OMSA 9.5.0 (minimum version) will support VMware ESXi 7.0 which is targeted for release in the second half of 2020.

  2. Alternatively, use iDRAC as a replacement to OMSA. iDRAC provides monitoring features similar to OMSA and is OS independent.

  3. To upgrade VMware ESXi 6.x to 7.0, uninstall OMSA 9.4.0 (or earlier versions) prior to upgrading from ESXi 6.x to 7.0.
