How to Install Windows 10 on Skylake with MDT 2013 Update 2.

NOTE: This procedure is only for Windows 10 Enterprise or MSDN / Volume License media; it will not activate Dell OEM media.

Follow the steps below to install Windows 10 on the OptiPlex 7040 (or other Skylake systems) using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2013 Update 2:

NOTE: This procedure can take 1-3 hours to prepare the media in some cases, depending on Internet and USB speeds.
  1. Download Windows ADK 10 1511 from the following link: Windows ADK 10 1511SLN302441_en_US__1iC_External_Link_BD_v1 and choose the Install Path for installation: (See Figure 1.)

  2. Select Deployment Tools and Windows PE from the list of features to install: (See Figure 2.)

  3. Download and install the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2013 Update 2 from the following link: Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2013 Update 2SLN302441_en_US__1iC_External_Link_BD_v1 .
  4. Download and install the 7-Zip utility program from the following location: 7-Zip UtilitySLN302441_en_US__1iC_External_Link_BD_v1 .
  5. Download Rufus from the following location: https://rufus.akeo.ie/SLN302441_en_US__1iC_External_Link_BD_v1 .
  6. Download the Windows 10 PE CAB file from the following location at the Dell Techcenter: Windows 10 PE CAB.
  7. Extract the Windows 10 PE CAB file to a temp directory. (C:\DC\Win10PECAB)
  8. Download the Windows 10 Driver CAB file for the OptiPlex 7040 from the following location at the Dell Techcenter: OptiPlex 7040 Windows 10 Driver CAB.
  9. Extract the OptiPlex 7040 Windows 10 CAB file to a temp directory. (C:\DC\7040-win10)
  10. Open the Deployment Workbench within the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit.
  11. Right click on Deployment Shares.
  12. Select New Deployment Share.
  13. Select a path for the Deployment Share.
  14. Select to set a local Administrator password and to enable BitLocker if desired: (See Figure 3.)

  15. Click MDT Deployment Share.
  16. Right click Out of Box Drivers and select New Folder.
  17. Enter PEx64.
  18. Right click PEx64.
  19. Choose Import Drivers.
  20. Browse to the temp directory with the Windows 10 PE CAB files C:\DC\WIN10PECAB\winpe\x64 directory: (See Figure 4.)

  21. Go to Advanced Configuration, Selection Profiles.
  22. Right click Selection Profiles.
  23. Select New Selection Profile.
  24. Name the New Selection Profile "PEx64 Drivers".
  25. Select Out of Box Drivers \ PEx64: (See Figure 5.)

  37. Mount the Windows 7 Enterprise or MSDN / VL OS ISO or insert to the DVD Drive.
  38. Right click the W10x64 Folder.
  39. Select Import Operating System.
  40. Select Full set of source files.
  41. Browse to the DVD / ISO Drive that says J_CENA_X64: (See Figure 9.)

  42. Name the Destination Windows 10 x64 Pro or Enterprise 1511 (depending on which disc / ISO you use). You may see multiple versions of Windows imported: (See Figure 10.)

  44. Right click on Out of Box Drivers and create a new folder.
  45. Name the folder W10x64.
  46. Right click W10x64 and create a new folder.
  47. Name the folder OptiPlex 7040: (See Figure 13.)

  48. Right click on OptiPlex 7040 and select Import Drivers.
  49. Select the x64 directory under the OptiPlex 7040 CAB file: C:\DC\7040-win10-a01-wwxy2\7040\win10\x64 (See Figure 14.)

  50. Go to Selection Profiles under Advanced Configuration.
  51. Right click Selection Profiles and create a new Selection Profile.
  52. Name it W10x64 Drivers.
  53. Select W10x64 under Out of Box Drivers: (See Figure 15.)

  54. Right click on Task Sequences and select New Task Sequence.
  55. Task Sequence ID will be W10x64-1.
  56. Task Sequence name will be Deploy Windows 10 x64 Pro or Enterprise SP1 (depending on your edition).
  57. Select Standard Client Task Sequence.
  58. Select your edition of Windows 10x64: (See Figure 16.)

  60. Enter your name and preferred Internet Explorer Home Page.
  61. Enter a local Administrator password.
  62. Right click on the Deploy Windows 10 x64 Task Sequence and go to Properties.
  63. Select Task Sequence.
  64. Select Preinstall.
  65. Select Inject Drivers.
  66. Choose W10x64 Drivers as the Selection Profile.

  68. Right click on Media and select New Media.
  69. Choose Selection Profile: Everything.
  70. Select a temp directory for the media path.
  71. Right click on MEDIA001 and go to Properties.
