Connectrix MDS Switch: Hosts lose a path to VPLEX Front-End ports on a zone activation

Summary: On a zone activation, all HBAs zoned to a VPLEX front-end port are logged out and lose a path.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

Host losing paths.

ESX host may stop responding and require a reboot to recover.

Change:
Zone activation.
HBA ports and VPLEX front-end ports are not involved in the zoning changes.

Cause

VPLEX performs fabric discovery on fibre channel ports (front and back-end, and FC-WANCOM) every 90 seconds and does this using "Get all next" (GA_NXT) name server command. It performs this outside of receiving a RSCN from the switch or PLOGI from a zoned HBA.

Due to Cisco issue CSCvw75655, if VPLEX is performing its fabric discovery on a front-end port while a zone set activation or commit is underway, there is a small chance that VPLEX only returns its own fibre channel address (FCID). It assumes that any HBA logged into it, is no longer connected to the fabric, and sends a logout (PLOGO) to each HBA zoned to it.

VPLEX logs the fc/4 events for every HBA that it logs out and fc/3 events, on the next 90 second fabric discovery, when it receives the correct information from the switch name server.

How the HBA handles this logout depends on its driver or firmware. The ESX host in this example is unavailable and required a reboot.

Note: Periodic fabric discovery is done to ensure that VPLEX has updated fabric data. There is a possibility that not all the RSCNs reach the VPLEX from the fabric.

Resolution

Workaround:
On the Connectrix switch, disable the name server or zone server shared database feature as follows:

switch# no zoneset capability active mode shared-db vsan <vsan-id>

Note: The zone set shared-db function is an efficiency where name server and the zone server share information. Disabling the feature has no negative impact on the environment.

Cisco has confirmed that the change is a local change and not global. This command should be run on every switch that has VPLEX attached to it.

Resolution:

NX-OS 8.4(2c)

VPLEX Fabric Discovery:
Example:
Host 1, Host 2, and Host 3 zoned to a single VPLEX front-end port.

VPLEX front-end port: FCID 0x200b20
Host 1: FCID 0x340000
Host 2: FCID 0x340020
Host 3: FCID 0x340040

Working.

  1. VPLEX sends a "Get all next" command to the Name server with the fibre channel address (FCID) of "0xffffff" (highest).
  2. Name server replies with details for VPLEX front-end port (lowest).
  3. VPLEX sends a "Get all next" command to the Name server with the fibre channel address (FCID) of VPLEX front-end port.
  4. Name server replies with details for Host 1.
  5. VPLEX sends a "Get all next" command to the Name server with the fibre channel address (FCID) of Host 1.
  6. Name server replies with details for Host 2.
  7. VPLEX sends a "Get all next" command to the Name server with the fibre channel address (FCID) of Host 2.
  8. Name server replies with details for Host 3.
  9. VPLEX sends a "Get all next" command to the Name server with the fibre channel address (FCID) of Host 3.
  10. Name server replies with details for VPLEX front-end port.
  11. VPLEX stops here as it receives the fibre channel address (FCID) of itself which has already been discovered (recrossed).

More details on fix for issue CSCvw75655 which has been added to NX-OS 8.4(2c).

A reminder of what causes this issue:
The issue occurs when a target device issue FCNS GA_NXT command and only gets its own FCID back, indicating it is not zoned with other devices. Some target device issues these GA_NXT on a periodic basis; they are not driven by RSCN or other stimulus, and are thus vulnerable to this issue.
The cause is that when a zone set activation or commit is in progress there is a small window of time where FCNS will only return the issuer's FCID in a GA_NXT reply and none of the others that it is zoned with. This is a consequence of the zone set shared database function that was implemented in Cisco MDS NX-OS 7.3(0)D1(1).

This is the fix description from Cisco:
As part of activation, deactivation triggers which clears the SDB. Along clearing the SDB, it sends out notification to all subscribers. This is now not done. Also, added a new sequence which will send the SDB commit notification separately. This will zone to build the SDB and send one final notification.
There is a fix in version 8.4(2c) only.

SDB = Zoneset Shared Database.
