Symptoms
External monitor cannot show video when the Display setting shows an extra monitor.
Affected Models:
- Alienware m15 R7
- Dell G15 5520
- Dell G15 5521 Special Edition
- Dell G16 7620
Cause
The computer BIOS and Thunderbolt controller send the Hot Plug Detect (HPD) notification/assertion in this condition to the graphics card for headset display detection when the issue occurs.
Resolution
NVIDIA Video Driver
To resolve this issue, update the NVIDIA video driver to version 528.79 or newer.
Workarounds
If you are unable to update the video driver, the following workarounds can be used to solve this behavior.
- Unplug then re-plug in the external monitor.
- Change the display mode to "Automatic Select" or "Optimus" mode in the NVIDIA control panel.
