Latitude 3340, 3440, and 3540 Video Recording Delay When Taking Videos by Using the Cheese App

Users experience a delay while using the pre-installed app Cheese to record video.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Install Ubuntu 22.04
  2. Boot to operating system
  3. Open the preinstalled app Cheese
  4. Start recording video
  5. Video recorded delay

Cause

This is a known industry issue with Ubuntu 22.04. There is an internal data error to retrieve pipewiresrc data for the preview of Cheese.

Resolution

Workaround:

Method 1:

Disable v4l2 in pipewire.

  1. Back up media-session.conf to media-session.bak using the command below:
Copy /usr/share/pipewire/media-session.d/media-session.conf to /usr/share/pipewire/media-session.d/media-session.bak 
  1. Comment out v4l2 in media-session.conf
    1. Open Terminal
    2. Run commands:
sudo gedit /usr/share/pipewire/media-session.d/media-session.conf
  1. Find the v4l2 and comment out it with #.
    Type # in front of v4l2 in media-session.conf

Method 2:

Install a third-party application:

  1. Open Ubuntu Software Center
  2. Select Photo and Video category
    Ubuntu Software Center
  3. Select an application and install it (for example, Camera).
    Select an application
Note: Ubuntu plans to replace the Cheese application with another application, which will start from the next operating system generation Ubuntu 24.04 (in 2024).
