Dell Ubuntu Computers Stop Responding at the Dell Splash Screen on First Start Up

Ubuntu computer does not pass the splash screen the first time you turn the computer on

You may experience an issue with a Dell Computer that comes from Dell with the Ubuntu Linux operating system installed.

The computer stops responding at the Dell splash screen in the following conditions:

• You have pulled the computer out of the shipping box and turned the computer on for the first time.
• You have run the operating system recovery on the computer and turned the computer on for the first time.
• Ubuntu 22.04 comes installed from Dell on the computer.

The following computer models have displayed this issue with Ubuntu installed:

• Latitude 3340 Laptop
• Latitude 3440 Laptop
• Latitude 3540 Laptop

A timing issue has been identified with the first time that you turn the computer on. The Ubuntu installer Ubiquity triggers the gnome-shell service the first time that you turn the computer on.

This means that some times Ubiquity is triggered twice. This means that the display manager does not get the correct information. The display server does not start successfully, and the computer stops responding.

You can resolve this by restarting the computer:

1. Hold down the power button for longer than five seconds to turn the stopped responding computer off.

2. Turn the computer back on, and it passes the splash screen and boots into the Ubuntu operating system.

3. You can turn the computer on and off as normal from this point.
