PowerEdge: CPU Thermal Trip or Voltage Outside of Range Warnings logged in SEL/LC during Power Down sequence
Summary: During system shutdown, users of 15G PowerEdge servers may encounter SEL/LC messages indicating CPU thermal trip and/or voltage outside of range. These messages are spurious and do not affect system functionality. ...
Symptoms
Users may observe the following messages indicating CPU thermal trip or voltage outside of range in the System Event Log (SEL) and Lifecycle Controller (LC) during system shutdown:
2023-12-16 03:39:47 856 VLT0305 CPU 1 VCCIN PG voltage is within range. 2023-12-16 03:39:32 855 VLT0304 CPU 1 VCCIN PG voltage is outside of range. 2023-12-16 03:39:28 854 CPU0001 CPU 1 has a thermal trip (over-temperature) event. 2023-12-16 03:39:28 853 SYS1001 System is turning off.
Notably, these messages may be seen only in a few systems and do not occur consistently in impacted systems.
Cause
Resolution
If users encounter these messages during an intended system shutdown or power cycle, no action is necessary; they can be safely disregarded.
Users with the following system models could apply the latest CPLD firmware available on the Dell Support Site containing the fix to remove the spurious messages.
| Platform | CPLD Version | Remarks |
MX750c |
1.0.5 |
SWB# W6FF1, released in Dec 2023 |
R750, R650, R750xa |
1.1.0 |
SWB# 9VPFM, released in March 2024 |
If this issue is seen on other models as well, the recommendation is to check for any available CPLD Firmware to update to rule out false messaging.
