How To Collect Logs in ThinOS 10

Logs for ThinOS 10 can be collected from either Wyse Management Suite or using a USB disk.


Affected Platforms:

Follow the appropriate instructions to Collect Logs From Wyse Management Suite or Collect Logs From the ThinOS 10 Thin Client Using a USB Disk. Changing log settings allows you to collect core dumps and network traces, and to enable debug logs and additional tracing from both Wyse Management Suite and the local console on the thin client.

Collect Logs from Wyse Management Suite

  1. Log in to the Wyse Management Suite console.
  2. Go to the Devices tab.

  3. Select the device from which you want to export logs.
  4. In the Device Details page, select the Device Log tab and then click Request Log File.
  5. In the Alert window, check the box next to Network Traces and Core Dump if appropriate, select the repository where you want the logs to be uploaded, and then click Send Command. The logs are uploaded from the device to the selected Wyse Management Suite repository.

  6. Once the logs are available, download them by clicking the text that reads click here.

Collect Logs from the ThinOS 10 Thin Client Using a USB Disk

  1. Ensure that the USB disk is formatted to FAT32.
  2. Insert the USB disk into the ThinOS 10 device.
  3. Pull the toolbar and click Settings, Troubleshooting, and then Export Logs.

  4. A window appears informing you that the logs may contain environment-specific information.
    1. To clear the logs after being exported, select the corresponding option.
    2. To exclude the core dumps from the exported logs, select the corresponding option.
    3. To continue, click Accept.

  5. When prompted, set a complex password to encrypt the logs and then click OK to start the export.

    Note: You must provide this password to Dell Support to decrypt the logs.
  6. The logs are saved to the USB disk.

Change Log Settings in Wyse Management Suite

  1. Access the Wyse Management Suite console.
  2. Go to the Groups & Configs tab.
  3. Select the ThinOS 10 device group where you want to change the log settings.
  4. Go to Edit Policies.
  5. Select ThinOS 10.x from the list.
  6. Go to Advanced, Services, and then Troubleshooting Settings.

  7. Enable debug logs by selecting Debug in the Event Log Level dropdown menu or select another option from the menu as required.

  8. To enable the capture of network traces, click the corresponding switch.

  9. To enable the capture of wireless adapter network traces, click the corresponding switch.

    Note: For all other logging options, follow the instructions provided by Dell Support on a case-by-case basis.
  10. Click Save and Publish.

Change Log Settings in ThinOS 10

You can change the device log settings using the Troubleshooting Pane or the Admin Policy Tool. Click the appropriate option for more information.

Troubleshooting Pane:

  1. Pull the toolbar and click Settings, Troubleshooting, and then Capture.

  2. The options available are:
    • Capture Debug Logs: Logs are captured with the highest level of details available.
    • Capture Network Packet: Network traces of the wired connection are added to the logs.
    • Capture Wireless Packet: Network traces of the wireless connection are added to the logs.
    • Capture User Coredump: A user coredump of the operating system is added to the logs that are collected.
    • Capture USB Packets: USB traces are added to the logs collected.
      Note: Enable or disable these options as directed by Dell Support.

Change Log Settings in the Admin Policy Tool

  1. Pull the toolbar and click Settings, then Admin Policy Tool.

  2. You are presented with an interface that is similar to the policy editor in Wyse Management Suite. To change the logging settings, follow Steps 6 through 11 of the section Change Log Settings in Wyse Management Suite.
