PowerEdge: 17G Servers Prompt For Liquid Cool Settings Input After iDRAC10 Firmware Update

Summary: Dell PowerEdge 17G servers that shipped before March 24, 2025 will prompt for Liquid Cooling capability after updating iDRAC10 firmware.

Symptoms

PowerEdge 17G servers that shipped before March 24, 2025 will prompt for Liquid Cooling capability after updating to the latest iDRAC10 firmware. Liquid Cool configurations were introduced with iDRAC10 1.20.25.00 firmware. PowerEdge 17G servers that shipped before March 24, 2025 did not have the Liquid Cool Setting defined.

RACADM Example:

racadm>>get System.ThermalConfig.LiquidCoolSetting

[Key=System.Embedded.1#ThermalConfig.1]

LiquidCoolSetting=Unknown

After upgrading to iDRAC10 1.20.25.00 or beyond, the LiquidCoolSetting read-only attribute will prompt for input during the server POST sequence.

Server POST Example:

BIOS Liquid Cool Configuration Prompt

No Liquid Cooling setting on Liquid Cooling capable system

Press Y to set Liquid Cooling setting to Enabled

Press N to set Liquid Cooling setting to Disabled

Press other key to skip Liquid Cooling setting for this boot

The server will sit at this prompt for 15 seconds before continuing through the boot sequence. This prompt is present on every server boot until a user response is input through the keyboard.

Cause

Orders shipped before March 24, 2025 did not have the System.ThermalConfig.LiquidCoolSetting value defined during the build process.
The default value of this setting is 'Unknown' until the correct value is input to select whether the server is air-cooled or liquid cooled.

Resolution

All orders shipped after March 24, 2025 have the appropriate cooling configuration correctly defined. No user intervention is required for these servers.

Since the System.ThermalConfig.LiquidCoolSetting attribute is read-only, the only input mechanism is through the keyboard at the POST prompt.

Note: All servers shipped before March 24, 2025 are air-cooled configurations.
Inputting 'N' on the keyboard when prompted sets the thermal configuration to air-cooled, which is the expected value and stops further prompts during POST.

Ignoring the prompt at POST does not have any functional thermal impact in this scenario. The iDRAC10 defaults to air-cooled thermal behavior if the setting remains undefined.
