"Plugged in, not charging" messages in Windows Vista and 7

Users may notice the message "Plugged in, not charging" appearing in the lower right corner of the desktop in Windows Vista or 7. This can occur when the power management settings for the battery management have become corrupted. If you have checked the battery LEDs and tried a known good, (if possible), perform these steps to resolve the issue.

A failed AC adapter may also cause this error message. Be sure to test with a known good AC adapter, if one is available. If one is not available, then please visually inspect the AC adapter and cables for damage or follow your normal troubleshooting process.

1. Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager at the top of the window.
2. Expand the Batteries category.
3. Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall.

Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver.

  4. On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes . Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes. ( After the uninstallation process you can also restart the system for Windows to automatically detect the driver and reinstall it. )

Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging. ( Please check the battery icon on the right bottom side of your Windows screen to see if it is charging. )

Please download the latest BIOS and Chipset drivers from Dell Drivers & downloads page.
