The CLI displays:

Failed to join the domain with the following error message:
*** Internal error

Example:

  • # cifs set authentication active-directory mycompany.com 192.168.123.123
    (..)
    Enter domain user (user or user@OTHERDOMAIN.COM): administrator
    Enter domain password:
    Failed to join the domain with the following error message:
    *** Internal error
 

Causa

The message "internal error" is a generic result and does not indicate the root cause.
This error commonly occurs when CIFS/SMB communication between the Data Domain system and the AD domain controller is being blocked.

Typical external causes include:

  • Firewall restrictions
  • Incorrect or incomplete DNS or name resolution
  • System time not synchronized between DD and the domain controller
  • Incorrect network routing
  • General network connectivity issues

Resolución

Verify external dependencies before retrying the AD join:

  • Confirm required CIFS/SMB, and AD ports are open on any firewalls.
  • Validate DNS resolution (forward and reverse).
  • Ensure that system time on Data Domain matches domain controllers.
  • Confirm that routing paths to domain controllers are correct.
  • Test general network communication to AD hosts.

If all environmental and network checks succeed but the error persists, open a service request with your support provider for additional diagnosis.
