Troubleshooting USB Type-C Issues

  1. No video or Monitor not detected:
    • Check your USB Type-C or Thunderbolt cable. The USB Type-C cables that are provided with your Mac system may only support charging. Use the USB Type-C or Thunderbolt cable that is provided with your Dell UltraSharp monitor.
    • Check your graphics card specifications to make sure the display resolution is supported.
    • Check your graphics card driver for updates.
    • Check your monitor Input Selection to make sure it is set to “Auto Select” or “USB Type-C.” This can be done through the monitor OSD menu. Refer to your monitor User’s Manual.
    • Get the system to detect the monitor. Go to System Preferences > Displays > Alt/Option key > Detect Displays.
  2. There is video, but the Mac system is not charging:
    • Use the USB Type-C or Thunderbolt 3 cable that is shipped with your Dell monitor.
    • Depending on the model, not all USB Type-C ports on the monitor support Power Delivery to charge your Mac system. Always connect to the USB Type-C port with Power Delivery logo (65 W or 90 W). Refer to Table 1 for more information.

Example for the Dell UltraSharp U3219Q monitor (Figure 2):
Dell Ultrasharp U3219Q Ports and Mac Connection
Figure 2: Illustration of how to connect the monitor.
  3. The monitor USB Type-C only provides 65 W or 90 W Power Delivery. Can it charge my Mac system?
    • Yes it can.
NOTE: Your Mac system has higher power requirement, charging time may be longer. If needed, use the power adapter that is provided with your Mac system.
  4. I cannot get maximum resolution on the monitor:
    • Check your graphics card specification and make sure the video card can support the monitor’s maximum resolution.
    • Try using Extended Desktop mode. To do this, go to your Mac’s System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement Tab > Extended Desktop (make sure Mirror Displays is unchecked).
  5. Fuzzy or blurry image:
    • Make sure Display Resolution in System Preferences is set to Default and not Scaled.
  6. Font appears too small:
    • Try setting larger fonts in System Preferences. Go to System Preferences > Display. Select Larger Text from the Display Tab.
  7. Cannot control monitor’s speaker volume with Mac system’s keyboard controls:
    • Try setting the monitor as the main sound output device from System Preferences.
  8. Using a dock or adapter:
    • Dell does not recommend using a third-party dock or adapter to connect your Ultrasharp monitor with a Mac system.
  9. Intermittent performance of USB devices connected to monitor:
    • Depending on the UltraSharp monitor model, the supported USB bandwidth over USB Type-C connection is either USB 2.0 or USB 3.0. Using USB 3.0 devices (e.g. webcam, Ethernet adapter) on monitors that only support USB 2.0 speeds over USB Type-C may lead to intermittent performance of the connected devices.
    • Some Dell UltraSharp monitors (e.g. U2719DC) allow you to toggle the USB bandwidth over USB Type-C from USB 2.0 to 3.0 via USB Type-C Prioritization setting > High Data Speed. Refer to your monitor User’s Manual.

Example for U2719HC OSD Menu (Figure 3)

Figure 3: Example of the on-screen display (OSD) menu of a Dell monitor.
  10. Getting maximum resolution on Dell UltraSharp U4919DW ultrawide monitor:
    • Using Intel Graphics on your Mac system, you can display up to 3840 x 1080 resolution with the USB Type-C connection to the Dell U4919DW monitor.
    • For a higher resolution of 5120 x 1440 with the USB Type-C connection, use a Mac system with a non-Intel discrete graphics card (NVIDIA or AMD).
  11. MacOS Power Chime when connected to U3419W or U3818DW monitor:
    • You may hear a power chime noise on some Mac systems while it is asleep and charging from a USB Type-C connection to a Dell U3419W or U3818DW monitor. Try one of the following to resolve the problem:
    • Update your OS and drivers.
    • Disable sleep on the Mac system. Go to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Prevent monitor from sleeping automatically when the display is off.
    • Disconnect the USB Type-C cable from your Mac system whenever you power off your system.
    • Use the power adapter provided with your Mac system to charge it.
    • Intel no longer supports single-port 5K resolution on external monitors. 2 ports need to be plugged in to get a 5K resolution on external 5K monitors if the system only has Intel integrated graphics.
  12. No Video when connected to UP2720Q:
    • The UP2720Q monitor ships with a Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) Active Cable for connecting to a Thunderbolt 3 Mac system. Using this cable with a Mac system that only supports USB Type-C (with DP Alt Mode) may lead to No Video.
    • If you are using a Mac system with USB Type-C (with DP Alt Mode) such as MacBook 2015, please purchase a Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) Passive Cable or USB Type-C DP Alt Mode Cable separately. Dell Part numbers for Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) Passive Cable: A9905599, A9905597, A9269731.
NOTE: You may see the following icon beside your Mac’s USB Type-C port - USB Icon for USB-C (with DP Alt Mode), Thunderbolt Icon for Thunderbolt 3.
  13. Is there a Mac version of the Dell Display Manager Software?
    • The Mac version of Dell Display Manager (DDM) will be available at the end of September 2021 to support the new Mac with M1 chip.
