Symptoms

  • Two screens show visible variation in color tone (for example, one appears warmer/yellower, the other cooler/bluer) Figure 1.
  • Differences are noticeable when:
    • Mirroring or extending the desktop across multiple displays
    • Comparing similar content on both screens
  • No error messages or system faults are present.

Affected Environments

  • Laptop internal LCD panels
  • External monitors (any brand/model)
  • Multi-monitor setups
  • Systems running standard operating systems with default display profiles

Cause

Display panels may differ in color output due to several normal factors:

  1. Manufacturing Variability
    • Panels are often sourced from multiple vendors.
    • Even panels made by the same manufacturer can vary slightly between production batches.
  2. Panel Technology Differences
    • Variations in materials, backlighting, and panel type (IPS, VA, OLED, so forth) affect color reproduction.
  3. Factory Calibration Differences
    • Not all displays are calibrated to identical standards.
    • Some premium monitors are precalibrated, while others use default profiles.
  4. Software and Color Profiles
    • Operating system color profiles and GPU settings influence display output.
  5. Natural Tolerance Levels
    • Minor color variation is within acceptable tolerances and does not indicate a defect if within specification.

Resolution / Workarounds

Option 1: Calibrate Displays Using Integrated Tools

  2. Ensure to adjust:
    • Gamma
    • Brightness
    • Contrast
    • Color balance
  3. Apply calibration to each display individually

Option 2: Adjust Graphics Software Settings

  • Use GPU or display software (for example, graphics control panels)
  • Modify:
    • Color temperature
    • RGB levels
    • Color profiles
  • Apply consistent settings across all displays

Option 3: Match Display Settings Manually

  • Adjust monitor on-screen display (OSD) settings:
    • Brightness
    • Contrast
    • Color presets (warm/cool/neutral)
  • Try to visually match output between displays
