Replacing the NVRAM backup battery

Prerequisites

NOTE: There is a danger of a new battery exploding if it is incorrectly installed. Replace the battery only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer. Discard used batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions. See the safety instructions that came with your system for additional information.
CAUTION: Many repairs may only be done by a certified service technician. You should only perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your product documentation, or as directed by the online or telephone service and support team. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that are shipped with your product.
  1. Follow the safety guidelines listed in the Safety instructions section.
  2. Follow the procedure listed in the Before working inside your system section.
  3. Remove the following:

    1. system cover
    2. hard drives or SSDs
    3. hard-drive backplane or SSD backplane
    4. hard-drive cage or SSD cage
  4. If installed, remove the memory module.

Steps

  1. Locate the system battery on the system.
  2. Hold the battery and pull it toward the positive side of the battery until the battery disengages from the connector.
  3. Lift the battery away from the system.

  4. To install a new system battery, hold the battery with the negative side of battery facing the negative side of the battery connector.

  5. Place the battery into the connector and push the positive side of the battery until the battery snaps into place.

Next steps

  1. If applicable, install the memory module.

  2. Install the following:

    1. hard drives or SSDs
    2. hard-drive backplane or SSD backplane
    3. hard-drive cage or SSD cage
  3. Follow the procedure listed in the After working inside your system section.
  4. Enter System Setup to confirm that the battery is operating properly.

  5. Enter the correct time and date in the System Setup Time and Date fields.
  6. Exit System Setup.

  7. To test the newly installed battery, remove the server module for at least an hour.

  8. Reinstall the server module after an hour.

  9. Follow the procedure listed in the After working inside your system section.
  10. Enter System Setup and if the time and date are still incorrect, see Getting help section.
