Dell Systems Management Overview Guide

OpenManage Enterprise

OpenManage Enterprise (OME) is the flagship Systems Management Console product for Dell PowerEdge, including rackscale and associated components such as Power Shelf and CDU (Coolant Distribution Units)

The key rackscale feature are:

  • Discovery, inventory, monitoring, and alerting for Power Shelves (For Dell IRSS - Integrated Rack Scalable Systems – racks only)
  • Rack level GPU and CPU reporting, carbon footprint, GPU density visualization
  • Perform a staggered power on or power off operation for rack groups
  • Discovery, inventory, and monitoring for Dell Top-of-Rack switches running the SONiC operating system
  • Automatically add devices to groups based on the physical hierarchy

It simplifies, centralizes, and automates the full span of server life cycle management activities. It helps in discovery, configuration, deployment, updates, and remediation. These tasks are performed within a single console that unifies the management of tower, rack, and modular platforms. OME helps in standardizing and supporting IT management policies and practices.

OME serves as the central hub of inventory of your PowerEdge environment, allowing for easier and more modular functions with plugins that can be added to OpenManage Enterprise capabilities.

  • Reduced time and effort that is required to manage small and large-scale IT environments using HTML5 user interface.
  • Simplified UI workflow provides a single management layer that unifies the management of PowerEdge tower, rack, and modular platforms.
  • Packaged and delivered as virtual appliance and supports ESXi, Hyper-V, and KVM.
  • Redesigned architecture on SLES with the PostgreSQL database. Operating system and database licenses are no longer required.
  • Centralized user management with role-based access control.
  • Enabled with customer automation and solution integration using Northbound API.
  • Enhanced policy-driven management.

OME has a three-tier license:

  • Free / No License Required: Besides monitoring and reporting, it also includes plugins such as OpenManage Enterprise Services that integrate with support and enable ticket creation. It provides Update Manager to centralize firmware file management, and Dell AIOps (formerly CloudIQ) to unify monitoring across Dell equipment.
  • OME Advanced: It provides all advanced OpenManage Enterprise features, including bare‑metal provisioning and power management.
  • OME Advanced+: It adds all capabilities of OME Advanced and also enables partner integrations with VMware vCenter, Microsoft Systems Center, ServiceNow, and CyberArk.
