Dell cooling problems

The fans are running at a higher speed than expected.

Prerequisites

NOTE:The fan number is referenced by the management software of the system. In the event of a problem with a particular fan, you can easily identify and replace it by noting down the fan numbers on the cooling fan assembly.

About this task

This error can be caused by the following reasons :

The fan installed is not compatible with the server
Ambient temperature is higher than the system specific ambient temperature
External airflow is obstructed
System cover, cooling shroud, EMI filler panel, memory module blank, or back filler bracket is missing or not installed properly
The fans are not seated properly
One or more fans are not functioning
iDRAC failure on the motherboard

Recommended action

Steps

Update the iDRAC firmware and system BIOS to the latest version and clear the system event logs (SEL).

NOTE:System reboot is required for the BIOS update.

Ensure that the system chassis is closed and all expansion card slots and bay covers are in place.
Check the internal system fans for obstructions and verify that all fans are spinning properly.
Reseat or swap any failing fans with a known-good fan, and replace the fan if a known-good fan works. If a known-good fan does not work, replace the system board.
