Removing the palm-rest assembly

CAUTION:The information in this removal section is intended for authorized service technicians only.

Prerequisites

  1. Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer.
  2. Remove the SIM-card tray, if applicable.
  3. Remove the base cover.
  4. Remove the battery.
  5. Remove the memory module.
  6. Remove the WWAN card, if applicable.
  7. Remove the M.2 2230 solid state drive or the M.2 2280 solid state drive, as applicable.
  8. Remove the WLAN card.
  9. Remove the speakers.
  10. Remove the USH board.
  11. Remove the smart card reader.
  12. Remove the system board.
    NOTE:The system board can be removed and installed with the fan and heat-sink assembly attached in order to simplify the procedure and preserve the thermal bond between the system board and fan and heat-sink assembly.
  13. Remove the WLAN-antenna module.
  14. Remove the I/O board.
  15. Remove the power button with optional fingerprint reader.
  16. Remove the display assembly.
  17. Remove the keyboard.

About this task

NOTE:The palm-rest assembly cannot be further disassembled once all prerequisites are completed. If the touchpad is malfunctioning and is required to be replaced, replace the entire palm-rest assembly.

The image below shows the palm-rest assembly after the prerequisites have been performed for any palm-rest replacement.

Steps

  1. After performing the prerequisites, you are left with the palm-rest assembly.
  2. For models shipped without WWAN card installed, use a plastic scribe to pry off the SIM-card slot filler from the palm-rest assembly and transfer it over to the replacement palm-rest assembly.
