PowerProtect Data Manager 19.17 Storage Array User Guide

Add a PowerMax asset source

Perform the following steps to add the Unisphere management server as an asset source to discover and protect PowerMax storage array assets.

Prerequisites

  • Refer to to the PowerProtect Data Manager compatibility matrix for the supported version of the PowerMax operating system, along with the HotFix information. The E-Lab Navigator provides software compatibility information for the PowerProtect Data Manager software.
CAUTION:Failure to apply the appropriate HotFix can have a critical impact on the PowerMax system during backup operations.
  • Review the "PowerMax solution architecture" section of the PowerProtect Data Manager Storage Array User Guide to verify the SAN and LAN prerequisites for component connectivity (Unisphere, PowerMax, ESXi hosts, PowerProtect DD, PowerProtect Data Manager). Also, verify that all LAN connections are available (for example, TCP ports are open and VLAN is configured). If VLAN separation is required, the data VLAN must be added into PowerProtect Data Manager to separate management and data traffic between PowerProtect Data Manager, Block Volume protection engines, DD, and Unisphere.
  • To add and discover a PowerMax asset source, ensure that you have enabled the PowerMax asset source in PowerProtect Data Manager. Go to Infrastructure > Asset Sources to enable the asset source.

Steps

  1. Log in to the PowerProtect Data Manager user interface as a user with the Administrator role.
  2. From the left navigation pane, select Infrastructure > Asset Sources.
    The Asset Sources window appears.
  3. Click the PowerMax tab.
  4. Click Add.
The Add Unisphere wizard opens and presents the applicable fields.
  5. Complete the following fields:
Table 1. Asset source required fieldsAdd Unisphere wizard asset source required fields
    Field Description
Name Type a descriptive name for the Unisphere for PowerMax management server.
Address Type the hostname or IP address for the source Unisphere management server.
Port Type the port number for HTTPS REST API access to the appliance. The default port is 8443 and should not be changed.
Credentials Select an existing set of management credentials. Alternatively, you can select Add Credentials, provide new credentials, and then click Save.
  6. By default, discovery happens automatically after you add the asset source and subsequent discoveries are either manual or scheduled. To schedule a full discovery at a certain time every day, select Schedule Discovery, and then specify a time.

If discovery is not scheduled, automatic discovery runs every day at 2 AM in the configured time zone.

  7. If the SSL certificate cannot be trusted automatically, a dialog box appears to request certificate approval. Review the certificate, and then click Verify.
  8. Click Save.
The PowerMax asset source appears as a table entry under the PowerMax tab of the Infrastructure > Asset Sources window.

After you add the PowerMax asset source, PowerProtect Data Manager starts a discovery in the background of all the PowerMax storage arrays that this Unisphere manages. Once these storage arrays are discovered, the arrays display when you expand the entry for the asset source.

NOTE:Only PowerMax systems with PowerMax OS version 10.1.0.3 and later are discovered. Discovery of earlier storage array versions is not supported in PowerProtect Data Manager. To view these storage arrays, use the Unisphere for PowerMax management interface.

Also, only the local PowerMax systems are discovered by default. However, you can also discover remote PowerMax systems by modifying the sdmng configuration file. Review the Troubleshooting appendix of the PowerProtect Data Manager Storage Array User Guide for more information about the settings that can be modified in this file. It is recommended to use Unisphere to discover only local PowerMax systems, and add a second remote Unisphere to discover remote PowerMax systems.

Subsequent discoveries depend on the settings that you chose. You can always do an on-demand discovery.

NOTE:By default, there is a Unisphere running inside the PowerMax array. Both an embedded and external Unisphere are supported. It is recommended that you add an external Unisphere for resource management in environments with multiple PowerMax storage arrays.
  9. To discover the storage groups for one or more PowerMax storage arrays from this Unisphere, enable management for the PowerMax:
    1. Expand the Unisphere asset source, and then select a PowerMax storage array.
    2. Select More Actions > Enable Management.
    3. Click Enable.
PowerProtect Data Manager discovers all the storage groups on the array. If the Unisphere discovery is scheduled, a discovery is automatically started on all the PowerMax arrays for which Enable Management is configured. You can also perform manual discovery of the storage group assets within this storage array.
  10. From the left navigation pane, select Infrastructure > Assets.
    The Assets window appears.
  11. Select the PowerMax Block tab.
A successful discovery lists all the storage groups of the PowerMax arrays that are enabled for management in PowerProtect Data Manager.
NOTE:Only storage groups (standalone, parent, and child storage groups) display in this view because PowerMax storage array protection in PowerProtect Data Manager is performed at the storage group level. To view the volumes under a storage group in the Infrastructure > Assets window:
    1. Click a parent or child storage group in the table to open the Details pane to the right of the table.
    2. In the Details pane, select the link next to Child Asset(s).

To manage volumes under the storage group however, you must use the Unisphere for PowerMax management interface.

Next steps

In the Infrastructure > Assets window, change the protection level for parent storage groups if it is required based on your protection requirements. For example, if the protection level of a storage group is set to Parent, only parent storage groups can be added to the protection policy and asset group, and all of its child storage groups are automatically protected. At this level, individual protection of child storage groups is not possible. However, if the protection level of a parent storage group is set to Child, only individual child storage groups can be added to the protection policy and asset group, and you cannot protect at the parent storage group level.

  1. Switch to the tree view to view the relationship between parent and child storage groups.
  2. Select a parent storage group.
  3. Select More Actions > Change Protection Level, and then click Continue.

After setting the protection level for the parent storage groups, add a protection engine to facilitate PowerMax storage group protection. Continue to Add a Block Volume protection engine for PowerMax workloads.
