PowerProtect Data Manager 19.17 Storage Array User Guide

Add asset groups to associate scripts with block volumes

After you enable and add pre-scripts and post-scripts, use the PowerProtect Data Manager UI to add an asset group so that you can associate scripts with one or more block volume assets.

Steps

  1. In the PowerProtect Data Manager UI, select Infrastructure > Assets.
  2. Select the PowerStore Block Volume or PowerMax Block Volume tab, and then select windows icon to switch to the group view.
  3. Click Add.
The Add Asset Groups wizard appears.
  4. On the Group Details page:
    1. Specify a name and description for the group.
    2. For PowerStore, select an Application Type. For example, select Generic for any application that requires or provides quiescing/unquiescing functionality to enable application-consistent snapshot creation, or MEDITECH for a MEDITECH application.
NOTE:MEDITECH is not supported for PowerMax block volumes.
    3. Click Next.
  5. On the Assets page:
    1. For PowerStore select one or more volumes and/or volume group. For PowerMax, select one or more storage groups.
    2. Add all dependent assets. For example, all of the volumes that belong to the Microsoft application.
    3. Click Next.
The Options > Pre/Post Script page appears.
  6. Complete the following settings on the page:
NOTE:The Options > Pre/Post Script page appears only when the host is enabled for the use of scripts. For asset groups, a maximum of two scripts is supported (one pre-script and one post-script).
    • Host Proxy—Select an eligible host system where you want to run the script.
NOTE:Before running the scripts on the selected hosts, verify during the agent installation that these hosts are enabled for executing the scripts.
    • Run As—Optionally select the user credentials that the agent service uses to run the script on the selected host system.

If you do not set this Run As option, the agent service runs the script as the privileged or nonprivileged user that was set during the application agent installation. For example, if the agent service is set to run as a nonprivileged (nonroot) user on Linux or UNIX, the agent service runs the script as the nonprivileged user ppdmusr.

NOTE:If the agent service was installed as a nonprivileged user, the agent service does not have the permissions to run script commands as a privileged user. It is recommended that you specify the appropriate privileged user credentials for the Run As option.
    • Pre-script—Select a compatible pre-script from the dropdown list. As an alternative, click Add Script to open the Add Script page to either upload a script file or copy the script into the Script text box. On the Add Script page, complete the fields as described in the topic "Add pre-scripts and post-scripts to the PowerProtect Data Manager server".

Script Timeout—Specify the maximum amount of time that the system waits for the pre-script operation to complete before timing out. The default timeout is 60 seconds. The maximum timeout is 24 hours, specified as hours or minutes.

Quiescing Timeout—When a pre-script is run, the application is put into quiesced state to create the snapshot for all volumes and volume groups in the asset group. Specify the maximum amount of time the application can stay in queisced state before timing out and failing the backup, after which PowerProtect Data Manager automatically runs the post-script to unquiesce the application. The default timeout is 60 seconds for a Generic application type, and 10 seconds for a MEDITECH application type. The maximum timeout is 24 hours, specified as hours or minutes.

    • Post-script—Select a compatible post-script from the dropdown list. As an alternative, click Add Script to open the Add Script page to either upload a script file or copy the script into the Script text box. On the Add Script page, complete the fields as described in the topic "Add pre-scripts and post-scripts to the PowerProtect Data Manager server".

Timeout—Specify the maximum time that the system waits for the post-script operation to complete. The default timeout is 60 seconds. The maximum timeout is 24 hours, specified as hours or minutes.

  7. Click Next.
The Options > Script Parameters page appears.
  8. If the script has parameters, specify one or more added parameter values, and click Save.
  9. When finished adding parameters, click Next to review the asset group information.
    The Summary page appears.
  10. On the Summary page:
    1. Review the script information. If you want to modify the parameters for any of the scripts, click Back to review the Options page information, and then click Edit next to the appropriate row.
    2. When the edits are complete, navigate forward to the Summary page and click Save.

Results

The group view in the Infrastructure > Assets window updates to display the associated assets under the asset protection group. Once these assets are protected, the assets update to display Application Consistent in the Consistency column when you select an asset and click View Copies.

Next steps

Go to Protection > Policies to add a PowerStore or PowerMax protection policy. The Add a Policy wizard contains a page for selecting asset groups. If the protection policy is already created, you can select the asset group and then select More Actions > Add to Policy.
