PowerProtect Data Manager 19.17 Storage Array User Guide
PowerStore solution architecture
Review the network communication and protection architecture information.
Network communication
The following example shows the management and data transfer communication between PowerProtect Data Manager, PowerStore, and protection storage (PowerProtect DD).

The following table provides more information about the communication paths and the protection mechanisms that are in place.
| Component | Description |
|---|---|
| PowerStore Cluster Management | PowerStore REST API (TCP 443) The following operations are initiated by PowerProtect Data Manager:
Communications are encrypted over HTTPS (TLS 1.2). Authenticated with the PowerStore security certificate that is obtained during asset source creation, corresponding to the PowerStore administrator. The PowerStore security certificate and administrator credentials are stored in the PowerProtect Data Manager lockbox. |
| Protection Traffic | DD Boost (TCP 111, 2049, 2052)
DD Boost traffic is encrypted by default. The DD Boost connection from PowerStore is authenticated with the DD Boost username and password. |
| Protection Storage Configuration | PowerProtect DD REST API (TCP 3009) The following operations are initiated by PowerStore:
Communications are encrypted over HTTPS (TLS 1.2). Authenticated with DD username and password that has User privileges. The protection storage serial number is stored in the PowerStore internal database. |
Protection architecture
The following diagram shows the supported operations for protecting data on PowerStore storage arrays.

Legend:
| 1 | The local snapshot is on the primary storage array. |
| 1 and 2 | The local snapshot is on the primary array, and the remote snapshot is on the replica array. |
| 3 | Back up to protection storage through the primary array. |
| 4 | Back up to protection storage through the replica array. During the backup, the snapshot is created on the primary array, moved to the replica array, and then backed up to protection storage. |
| 5 | Back up copy replication to protection storage. |
| 6 | Cloud tier for long-term storage or archival purposes. |
- You can store snapshot copies for the same volume or volume group on the primary storage array only, or on both the primary and replica storage arrays.
- You can protect the same volume or volume group through either the primary storage array or the replica storage array, but not both.
