PowerProtect Data Manager 19.17 Storage Array User Guide
Restore data to an alternate storage group
For primary or replicated backups that reside on a DD system, a restore to an alternate storage group enables you to restore data to a different storage group on the same storage array, or to a different storage array.
Prerequisites
Deployment of a block volume protection engine is required to restore PowerMax storage array assets. Review the section Add a Block Volume protection engine for PowerMax workloads to configure a Block Volume protection engine.
Also, note the following:
- Make sure that the application using the alternate storage groups to be restored is shut down.
- Detach or mark offline the volumes of the alternate storage group to be restored from all associated hosts.
- Remove Masking view from the restore destination storage group if it is located on the same ESXi host as the Block Volume protection engine.
- PowerMax storage groups contain allocated and unallocated blocks, so the restore destination needs to accommodate this configuration.
Steps
- Log in to the PowerProtect Data Manager user interface as a user with the Administrator role.
-
From the left navigation pane, select
.
The Restore window appears.
-
Click the
PowerMax Block tab.
The Restore window displays a list of block volume assets.
-
Restore individual assets or an asset group:
- To restore individual storage group assets, use list view and select the checkbox next to the asset that contains the backup. Click Restore to restore the most recent copy of the asset, or click View Copies to select from the available asset copies and then click Restore.
- To restore all of the storage groups from an asset group, switch to group view and select the checkbox next an asset group. Click Restore to restore the most recent copy, or click View Copies to select from the available copies and then click Restore.
You can also use the Search field or the filter in the Name column to locate a specific asset. -
Select one of the configured
objectives from the associated protection policy. For example, the primary backup
objective.
The wizard displays a list of the available copies from which you can restore.
-
Select an available copy, and then click
Next.
The Restore wizard moves to the Location page.
-
Select
Restore to alternate, and then click
Next.
A table of eligible storage groups appears.CAUTION:The contents in the original storage group can be overwritten if the restore destination is a parent storage group of the selected asset. For example, if the storage group is a parent storage group with child storage groups, and an individual child storage group of the parent is protected, then a restore to alternate automatically hides the child storage group from view because you cannot restore to the same storage group. However, the parent storage group is still visible, so you can select the parent as the destination for the restore, which might result in automatically overwriting the child storage group. Before performing the restore, verify that the storage group protection level will not result in overwriting the contents.
-
Select a storage array from the
PowerMax dropdown list.
You can optionally click Refresh to perform a full discovery of the system. Note that it can take several minutes to complete the operation. You can continue to use PowerProtect Data Manager while the discovery is in progress.
-
Select one of the following destinations for the restore:
- Select a storage group from the table. Only storage groups with a status of
Available are qualified for the restore.
NOTE:If the destination storage does not have the correct number of volumes required to perform the restore, restore validation fails. Ensure that the number of volumes and size of each volume on the destination storage group is equal to or greater than the number of volumes and size of the source asset at the time of the backup.
- Select an asset group from the table.
NOTE:To restore an asset group, there must be an asset group in the restore destination that has been created only for restore. The number and size of the storage groups in this asset group must be equal to or greater than the amount in the asset group being restored. If such an asset group does not exist in the restore destination, no selections will be available.
- For asset groups, click Map Assets to create a mapping to a compatible asset for each storage group.
- Select a storage group from the table. Only storage groups with a status of
Available are qualified for the restore.
- Click Next.
- On the Options page, set the stream count for the number of concurrent restore sessions for the selected storage group, and then click Next.
- On the Summary page, verify the details, and then click Restore to start the restore.
-
Go to the
window to monitor the restore.
A restore job appears with a progress bar and start time. If a restore job for this asset is already in progress, PowerProtect Data Manager queues a new restore job.
Next steps
After the restore completes successfully, the window of the PowerProtect Data Manager UI displays the mapping of source to destination volumes. This information appears under the Details tab for the job.
For mapped volumes, you must now perform the following:
- Manually create the Masking view for the destination storage group by logging into Unisphere.
- Attach the destination volumes to the host where the application was running.
- Run any commands that are required to start the application.
