PowerProtect Data Manager 19.17 Storage Array User Guide

Restore PowerStore block volume data to an alternate block volume

For primary or replicated backups that reside on a DD system, a restore to an alternate block volume enables you to restore data to a different volume or volume group on the same storage array, or to a different storage array.

Prerequisites

Note the following:

  • Make sure that the application using the storage groups to be restored is shut down.
  • Detach the volumes to be restored from all associated hosts.

Steps

  1. Log in to the PowerProtect Data Manager user interface as a user with the Administrator role.
  2. From the left navigation pane, select Restore > Assets.
    The Restore window appears.
  3. Click the PowerStore Block tab.
The Restore window displays a list of block volume assets.
  4. Restore individual assets or an asset group:
    • To restore individual volume/volume group assets, use list view and select the checkbox next to the asset that contains the backup. Click Restore to restore the most recent copy of the asset, or click View Copies to select from the available asset copies and then click Restore.
    • To restore all of the volumes/volume groups from an asset group, switch to group view and select the checkbox next to the asset group. Click Restore to restore the most recent copy of the volume or volume group, or click View Copies to select from the available copies and then click Restore.
You can also use the Search field or the filter in the Name column to locate a specific asset.
The Restore wizard opens on the Copy Selection page.
  5. Select one of the configured objectives from the associated protection policy. For example, the primary backup objective.
The wizard displays a list of the available copies from which you can restore.
  6. Select an available copy, and then click Next.
The Restore wizard moves to the Location page.
  7. Select Restore to alternate, and then click Next.
A table of available volumes and volume groups appears.
  8. Select a storage array from the PowerStore dropdown list.
You can optionally click Refresh to perform a full discovery of the system. Note that it can take several minutes to complete the operation. You can continue to use objectives while the discovery is in progress.
  9. Select the destination for the restore:
    • Select a volume or volume group from the table.
NOTE:Only compatible volumes/volume groups with a status of Available are qualified for the restore.
    • Select an asset group from the table.
NOTE:To restore an asset group, there must be an asset group in the restore destination that has been created only for restore. The number and size of the volumes/volume groups in this asset group must be equal to or greater than the amount in the asset group being restored. If such an asset group does not exist in the restore destination, no selections will be available.
    • For asset groups, click Map Assets to create a mapping to a compatible asset for each volume/volume group.

If the destination storage does not have the correct number of volumes required to perform the restore, restore validation fails. Ensure that the number of volumes on the destination is equal to or greater than the number of volumes on the source asset at the time of the backup.

  10. Click Next.
  11. On the Summary page, verify the details, and then click Restore to start the restore.
  12. Go to the Jobs > Protection Jobs window to monitor the restore.
A restore job appears with a progress bar and start time. If a restore job for this asset is already in progress, PowerProtect Data Manager queues a new restore job.

Next steps

If the destination storage does not have the correct number of volumes required to perform the restore, restore validation fails. Ensure that the number of volumes on the destination is equal to or greater than the number of volumes on the source asset at the time of the backup.
