Removing the heat-sink assembly - for computers shipped with discrete graphics card

CAUTION:The information in this removal section is intended for authorized service technicians only.

Prerequisites

  1. Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer.
  2. Remove the base cover.

About this task

NOTE:The heat-sink assembly may become hot during normal operation. Allow sufficient time for the heat-sink assembly to cool before you touch it.
NOTE:For maximum cooling of the processor, do not touch the heat transfer areas on the heat-sink assembly. The oils in your skin can reduce the heat transfer capability of the thermal grease.
The following image indicates the location of the heat-sink assembly and provides a visual representation of the removal procedure.

Steps

  1. Disconnect the left fan cable (JFAN1) and right fan cable (JFAN2) from the system board.
  2. Remove the four screws (M1.6x3) that secure the left and right fans to the palm-rest assembly.
  3. In reverse sequential order (5>4>3>2>1), loosen the five captive screws that secure the heat-sink assembly to the system board.
  4. Lift the heat-sink assembly off the system board.
